MUMMA
Our Beginnings
In August 2023, Mothers United in Mediating Mutual Alliances (MUMMA) held its first planning meeting. By September 2023, a few mothers were invited to the initial series of discussions. MUMMA is governed by a team of mothers that includes its founder, Dr. Jacqueline Getfield.
Our Aim

To identify and bridge gaps between professionals [in the education and health sectors] and families through research, communication, and engagement strategies.

Our Founder

Dr. Jacqui Getfield
After years of deep engagement with educators and health professionals, Jacqui Getfield decided to investigate some “whys “ behind these relationships. Why are these relationships necessary yet seemingly so one-sided? Why are these relationships so difficult for some families and not others? These questions led to a PhD dissertation with the seminal research question, “How do Black mothers as agents on behalf of their school-aged children experience disengagement within special education environments of the elementary public school system in Ontario, Canada?

By 2023, long after she earned the PhD, Dr. Jacqui Getfield was still engaged in the inquiry. She is a Black mother who is still advocating on behalf of her children and their peers. Dr. Jacqui Getfield has served her community by helping other mothers to advocate on behalf of their own children in schools and help spaces. These mothers are relentless in their efforts to help their children to thrive. And so it was that MUMMA was born. Dr. Jacqui Getfield founded MUMMA in Summer 2023 . Since then, MUMMA has continued to welcome and serve like-minded mothers, families, caregivers and educators who are focused on excellence for their children in schools and hospitals/clinics across Canada.

These days, Dr. Jacqui Getfield wears many hats as mother, researcher, speaker and advocate. Since 2002, she has held board member positions in Canada. She has coached CEOs, senior leaders and board executives to design communication strategies. She has consulted with HR and marketing departments to conduct communication audits. Currently, she is a researcher in academic circles, working in education and health sectors. Dr. Jacqui Getfield is passionate about clear, concise, consistent internal and external messaging as well as diverse, inclusive and equitable relationships.
